Wine Is Not Rocket Science...

Now we all know that there are wine snobs in the world, the folks who poo-poo a sweet wine, drinking wine from a screw top, you know the ones. That folks is NOT me. Find the grape you like, have it in the vessel you like at the temperature you like and just enjoy.  White grapes (actually the grapes are shades of green) like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or red grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zinfandel just to name a few is a good place to start your search.

Half the fun is finding the grape you like and sipping it your way. If you tend to like dry wine (sugar fermented away) rather than a sweeter wine ( more sugar left in it) so be it. Red instead of white, yes even with a nice rib eye steak is just fine in my book. Wine tasting and pairing with foods is all about PH and acidity but it really is all about personal preference.  Like ice in it, do it. Heck, you can even put a straw in it with an umbrella if you so choose. So find the one you like and enjoy.

What's that wine label really telling us....
In this country, in order to put the name of the grape on the label there has to be more than 70% of that grape in the blend. When you see a label that just says "Red Wine" or "White Wine" that is telling you there is  not 70% of any one grape in that bottle and there most likely is no vintage date on the label either. No vintage date tells the buyer that in that bottle are multiple kinds of grapes, grown in multiple areas, made from multiple pressings.  In order to put a Vintage date on the label generally not only must it have more than 70 % of the same grape but most of the grapes must come from the same geographic region and generally it is made from the 1st pressing of the grape versus the 2nd or 3rd pressing. So we will pay more money for a bottle of wine with a vintage date on it. Does it mean it is a better wine, not necessarily. Remember your "better" might not be the same as my "better.

White wines are made just from the juice, no skins attached and it is fermented in stainless steel tanks. Red wines are made from the skins and juice, fermented in stainless steel tanks, blended and then placed in oak barrels to age.

Next time... cork versus screw top and the amazing world of oak barrels.

OK, enough tidbits for now. Time to sip and chill...cheers!
